The Cathedral of the Marshes
15. Road to Emmaus: Old Oak Common, off Wormword Scrubs, by the Eurostar sidings.
At the far corner of the Scrubs a small escarpment rises from which a surprisingly broad view of London opens out – from the West End to Ealing. I wanted a resurrection image that would speak of the first ecstatic realisation of Christ’s triumph out of death. The dog walkers of the Scrubs assure me that if you meet another canine escort you fall into conversation, often developing across social boundaries and spheres of normal contact. Christ meets his friends in this unlikely setting and it is no surprise that they neither recognise him nor cut off the conversation till they break for tea in a local café.
