The Cathedral of the Marshes
6. Veronica wipes Christ’s face: Lubetkin’s Penguin Pool, London Zoo.
The simultaneously austere sepulchre-white and sensuous curves of Lubetkin’s modernist architecture provide the foreground for Veronica’s wiping of Christ’s face. Their drama is located in the slot of space in the right-hand margin of the composition. As with the second Station, I sought a space where, on a quiet day, few people would notice the strange procession. Zoos have an odd attraction; artificial captive worlds where exotic and tragic realities mix. Here the two helices entwine but do not touch; forming a circular shadow on the water.
